EARNING QUICK CASH
by
Michael Yank
Recent Grad, Harvard University
One way I found to make a decent amount of spending money at college without having to commit to the hours a part-time job demands was to participate in studies run by the various departments of my university. Both the psychology department and business school at my school were always looking for students to help out with their research and paid reasonably for participation.
While this may sound somewhat odd (after all, who wants to be a lab rat?), all the studies were completely harmless and some were even fun. For example, the business school would often run studies involving simple games with prisoner dilemma-style strategizing, and the better you performed in the game, the more money you would receive. Additionally, I was very interested in psychology in college, and participating as a test subject gave me a unique perspective on the way psychologists collect their data.
Of course, my main incentive for doing these studies was the sweet, sweet cash. I found that while most studies offered about $10/hour or less, some studies paid up to $20/hour. As the departments at my school kept pretty busy with research, I could almost always participate in a study whenever I wanted to. While you might not earn as much money as you might working at a job, it’s still a fine way to earn a few extra bucks.
