It began like any other morning. I got ready for school and picked up my book bag, but I already knew that today was different. Today was “Moving Up Day,” the day when every eighth grader would first step into the upper school. We were afraid of what was to come. Science was my first class. A pack of eighth graders timidly stepped into the huge room. Each of us claimed a stool around the long table. The scale of the room, however, hardly compared to the scale of the man who would follow us into it. Mr. Gruber may be thin, but he is enormously tall. At 6’3”, he dwarfed even the most mature middle-schooler. Mr. Gruber told us how we would get to explore many realms of science in “Foundations” class next year. He talked about physics and chemistry, biology and geology, and the connections between each of these disciplines. To end his class, he asked us to name any two objects for him to relate. He showed us how the room’s ceiling proves the existence of life on earth, and how the ocean has everything to do with a simple desk lamp. I walked away from that room with the realization that everything is intimately connected. Mr. Gruber’s Moving Up Day speech would express itself many times throughout my high school years. Most directly, it affected the way I thought about my education. I was emboldened to cross disciplinary boundaries, bringing Science into English class and Math into History. The story of Pyramus and Thisbe, for example, was not only relevant in Latin. Ovid actually helped me to understand Shakespeare in literature and Rome in history. Similarly, learning about the distinction between Romanticism and the Enlightenment in history gave me a deeper understanding of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in literature. This interdisciplinary approach also influenced my choice of employment. During the summer of 2000, still intrigued by the idea of connecting disciplines, I had the opportunity to cross technology with history and political science. I sought out Professor Ian Lustick, Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Lustick developed a dynamic systems model to predict the ways in which dominant and minority ideas interact and spread throughout cultures. In areas of conflict like Israel and Ireland, majority and minority views are always in flux. Whose ideas will win out? At what point will these ideas be stable enough to control future political influence? With Professor Lustick and his graduate students, I tested computer simulation models against current political theories—theories that may someday be used to determine the course of politics. None of this would have been possible if Mr. Gruber had not awakened me to the process of seeing connectedness and interrelationships. Since that time, my classmates and I have come to believe that Mr. Gruber is omniscient. For any question, he seems to come up with a logical and well-reasoned answer that melds together information from multiple sources. As I move forward in life, I am convinced that Mr. Gruber’s lesson, on that fateful day, may be the foundation on which my intellectual future rests. Though I am sure to forget the names of every anatomical muscle of the cat and rabbit, Mr. Gruber’s lesson that “the more you learn, the more you realize how little you know” will always remain with me. Only by learning to think, to analyze, to question and to form insights can we truly begin to understand the connections between things. These are the skills and processes upon which a lifetime of learning is based.
