Housed within ten foot concrete walls, a steel door, and covered with graffiti, the Sir James Henderson British School of Milan, Italy, possessed anything but a welcoming appearance. Inside, the atmosphere was no different. When the Gulf War came about, I spent weeks at home or in the mountains, unable to attend school because of recurring bomb threats. Time spent at school meant bodyguards with machine guns in the playground. After the American Bookstore half a block away from my apartment was bombed, I was ordered not to speak in public. Bus and subway rides, walks to and from school, and weekend museum trips were spent in silence. Essentially I had to discover a way to blend into several different environments and cultures, while at the same time maintaining my own sense of identity. In retrospect, I realize that perhaps I did not fully understand the extent of the opportunities I was faced with during these three years, namely the opportunity for world travel. It has taken time to understand the impact of this time with respect to the person I am now. I was born in Mexico City, then moved to Singapore, then to America, then to Italy and finally back to where I am currently living in Pennsylvania. My father’s childhood followed much of the same story, jumping from one country to another. For these reasons, though the feeling is much stronger now, I have always felt uprooted and perhaps in some ways dispossessed. Approached with the seemingly simple question: “Where are you from?” I often balk. Instead of an answer, I deliver a barrage of questions, for I have no true answer. These travels have left me lost in some aspects, but without them I would be just as lost. I never expected to feel culture shock in America, yet when I came back I found I had missed out on simple things that set me apart from other children. Having spent years on a concrete playground in Italy, I had no concept of dodge ball or mat ball. Though small, these little differences created the kind of alienation I felt initially upon my arrival in Milan. In the classroom at Sir James Henderson I was often put in the position as the American opinion, the American voice, many times speaking from a defensive standpoint. It was in these disputes with my elders and peers that I gained the ability to speak strongly and with conviction. If I seemed unsure in my arguments, there was no chance of convincing others. My cultural dilemma was certainly shared, though in many beneficial ways. Gathering friends from Israel, France, Greece, and Britain, to name a few, we all gave to each other and took as well, learning in ways in which we were not even aware. Though a shock, being thrown into cultures different from mine at such a young age has created the core of my person. These travels and the experiences that I have gained from them have become an intrinsic part of me. Though in many ways one could argue that patriotism has declined in the youth of today, there is an undeniable comfort in the ability to attach oneself to a certain culture or group. This is something for which I have searched, yet have been unable to find. Through discussion I discovered I shared these same sentiments with my sister, who, faced with the issue of college, solved this problem by studying in Scotland. Initially I thought that that path would be the right one for me as well. While visiting colleges in the UK, I knew that I had been wrong in my assumptions. I was not American and yet I was not European either. I needed to find a middle ground. Through the cultures I had experienced, I had found common themes throughout. I could not attach myself to one specific culture because each had an attribute I was seeking, but also lacked other important components. I sought a place that managed to combine these themes in a way that was welcoming and complete. At the universities I explored in England, I found a clear lean towards one culture, one way of thinking and doing. Immersing myself in this university would have meant devoting myself to one culture and limiting my exposure to others. Many of the colleges I visited in the United States projected much the same mindset. It was at Middlebury that I found that which I had been seeking. The emphasis on foreign languages, the strength of the study abroad programs, and the presence of foreign language houses clearly indicated that Middlebury placed the same value in multiculturalism as I myself did. For these specific reasons I felt as if attending Middlebury would not mean sacrificing my values and need for international exposure. Serving as a representative for America for three years gave me strength, confidence, and courage. I feel more balanced and more knowledgeable than I would have otherwise. New and different perspectives, though sometimes gained through difficult lessons and taking risks, have made me capable of interaction with a wide variety of personalities and cultures. I have been forced to truly question myself, my motives, my priorities, and my position. These conflicting viewpoints and cultures have guided me into examining my beliefs and given me the conviction to assert and firmly root myself, if not in a specific culture, then in a specific philosophy of living.
