It’s an opportunity to start over, maybe change directions if you weren’t happy with the old direction. It’s also an opportunity to test your mettle. The task of finding a new job is a tough challenge. There is a great deal to be learned in the process. What are tips regarding how best to use this time away from work? Don’t use the “time away from work.” Put all your time into looking for work. Prepare resumes, read books, talk to people (everyone has some relevant knowledge, network, or discipline). What are common mistakes after having been laid off, fired, or having quit a job? The most common mistake is to think that it’s a convenient time for a vacation and then to take off for a month and spend money in the process. A second mistake is to think that getting back on a payroll will be an easy matter. A third mistake is to take things as they come without taking stock, marshalling your resources, and making things happen. If you were suddenly laid off, fired, or if you quit your job now, what would you do? How would you respond? Take a few days a week at the most to figure out what happened and what your options are and to formulate a plan. Finding a new job is hard work and will require fortitude and drive. It’s a full-time job: 40 hours a week, five days a week, nine to five, minimum. Understand that it can take six months to a year to get the job you want. Get properly psyched for it. Learn how to interview, find some buddies to share war stories with, and remember that 10 no’s a week for 25 weeks followed by one yes means you have a job.
