It might be a good idea to develop a systematic way to approach each source. Here’s one way to do this with a book, but you should feel free to create your own system: • Check the book’s table of contents to find the most relevant sections. • Skim through the introduction. This is usually the roadmap to the book and it will help you focus on its key sections. • After you find the relevant chapters or sections, read them and take notes. Write down enough information so it will make sense to you when you read it later, but avoid copying sentences word for word. (And make sure that you always indicate from which source the information is coming.) • Check out the bibliography—if there is one—to see what other related sources you might want to read. Don’t waste too much time reading through the parts of your sources that aren’t helpful in developing good arguments for your term paper. No one is going to count how many pages you read or care whether you read each of your sources from start to finish.
