REVIEW BY BOOKLIST: Leaping From Public High to a Top U.
As part of the Students Helping Students series, this book discusses many elements of college life about which incoming freshmen may be anxious. Jackson, a current Harvard student, uses her own experience and the input of students from 12 of the most prestigious U.S. universities (including Brown, Cornell, Stanford, and Yale) to share enlightening and reassuring advice about preparing for life away from home in the most competitive arenas of higher education. She begins with suggestions on how to spend the summer before enrollment, then talks about surviving the first week, acclimating oneself to dorm life and new social demands, and easing into a daily routine that's comfortable and conducive to success. Each section contains short suggestions, quick interviews with students who excelled or failed at their first experiences, and quotations that repeat or support ideas in the text. The soothing tone is just right for addressing anxious teens."
