CATCHING UP by Jamay Liu Sophomore, Brown University I think the toughest part about making the transition from high school to college is getting used to the idea that your work will never “be done.” In high school, work was mostly short-term. If you finished your weekend’s homework, you could go out and have fun, without unfinished work or a guilty conscience hanging over you. In college, professors hand out syllabi on the first day of class that outline the semester’s workload. Oftentimes, the grade you receive for a course depends only on a few exams and papers. Readings are assigned, but usually, there is no one to check up on you or quiz you to make sure you’ve done them in time—it is easy to get by without having done the reading for large lecture classes. It’s also very easy to fall behind. It is really up to you to keep up with the work. College is all about learning how to manage your time, to sit down and do the reading, knowing that it isn’t “due” for a week, but that it is best to get started on three hundred pages now. College is about realizing that oftentimes, you can’t “finish” work—that there is always more to be done. (Actually, you find that in college, a lot of people spend an entire semester “catching up.”) It often comes down to decisions—should I go out, even though it’s Tuesday night, since I don’t have to turn in anything for any of my classes tomorrow? Or should I stay in and tackle the reading assignment I have for my comparative literature class?
