WE TALK WITH... Katie McGinigle Senior, Tufts University How was your social life as a freshman? I’m a senior now and I actually made all of my close friends freshman year—it’s amazing how many bonds you can form in such a short period of time and how tight they become. I think it has to do with the fact that everyone is encountering so many new things and learning so much at the same time that you grow up as a group. You really grow up together freshman year. How did living near a big city like Boston affect your social life? You’d think everyone would go off into the city and do their own separate thing, but ironically, I think it really brings people together. Tufts has a very close-knit campus. My high school, like most, if not all, high schools, was broken up by cliques. Things could not be more different at Tufts, and I think the city has a lot to do with that. As you explore a city, you meet so many new people and you become a lot less assuming when you see someone you already know at a place you never expected would interest them. So you find Tufts much more diverse than your public high school? Yes and no. I think the students are more open-minded and accepting. I may meet more students of diverse races at Tufts than I did in high school, but they all come from fairly similar economic backgrounds. Any advice to students making the transition from a public high school to a tough university? Smile a lot and never take anything at face value. Always try to find out more about people.
