To make the best of your advising relationship, be proactive and set ground rules and expectations upfront. Communication is a good thing. Use it. Talk to your advisor early on about how the two of you will work together. Will you have weekly status meetings to discuss where you are and where you might need to be headed in your writing or research? We highly recommend that you do in fact establish a meeting schedule. But the most important thing is that you and your advisor both know and expect the same—a regularly scheduled meeting if you agreed to it, or a meeting by appointment, if that’s what you decided. Talk about how involved you’d like your advisor to be in your research and your work. Will he or she be reading drafts often? Or are you going to agree on a few times during the year when you’ll give your advisor certain chapters on which to comment? Make sure you know what your advisor prefers in terms of communication between your meetings. Is phone or email better? When is the best time to call? What are your advisor’s busiest days when it might not be a good idea to show up at his or her door? While not everything you might talk about at the beginning will stay consistent throughout, it will get the two of you started on great terms. By showing your advisor that the way you two communicate and the way you receive his or her feedback is important to you, you’re showing that you’re respectful of their time.
